Review of Parallel Worlds
"Many of the poems in Christine De Luca's fine collection are written in Shetlandic. Without getting into debates about language versus dialect, the important point is that they could not have been written in anything else...The poems are not so much traditional as explorations of tradition; often using cultural parallels, concrete verse and translation to emphasise their themes of multiple identities and shared values over vast distances. If anyone questions the universal relevance of local idioms, I'd recommend De Luca's 'Whatsoever things are lovely' - a September 11 poem - oblique, haunting, 'a charm fornenst da grummel'."
